Lawsuit Filed Against Monroe Public Schools for Negligence Amidst Tragic Student Death

Detroit, MI — KOUSSAN LAW, a leading Michigan Personal Injury Legal Practice, announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Monroe Public Schools, several of the administrators, as well as multiple students (identified only by their initials), concerning the devastating incidents of persistent bullying and assault against Gary Ross, a 13-year-old student at Monroe Middle School.

It is alleged that fellow students of Monroe Middle School repeatedly bullied and physically assaulted Gary. Disturbingly, these traumatic episodes were recorded on student cell phones and disseminated extensively through online platforms, leveraging school resources, including, but not limited to, the Monroe Middle School’s internet network.

Despite being notified numerous times, Monroe Public Schools’ administration failed to act decisively and did not fulfill their legal obligations to address these concerns. This consistent negligence ultimately led to a heart-wrenching outcome where Gary, overwhelmed by the relentless bullying, caused fatal self-inflicted injuries by gunshot wound.

“The consequences of unchecked bullying in today’s educational environments are more severe and damaging than ever before,” says Brooke Mathis, Attorney at Koussan Law. “The proliferation of social media platforms and the ease of digital distribution mean that victims, like Gary, are not only traumatized in real-time but are forced to relive these harrowing experiences repeatedly, with the potential for lasting and, as in this tragic case, fatal consequences.”

Gary’s grief-stricken parents have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the relocation of Gary’s father, who, overwhelmed by the trauma, is unable to reside in the home where he discovered his son’s body. The community is encouraged to contribute and share the campaign in solidarity against bullying and in support of the Ross family.

This lawsuit aims to seek justice for Gary and his family and to shed light on the dire consequences of unchecked bullying in schools today. The firm is demanding $25,000,000 in damages on behalf of Gary’s bereaved family.

“The story of Gary Ross is a stark reminder that educational institutions must prioritize the safety and well-being of their students. Today’s interconnected world has made bullying more profound, permanent, and exponentially damaging. Our firm is committed to ensuring that Monroe Public Schools is held accountable,” adds Ali H. Koussan, Partner at Koussan Law.
